A notary public in North Dakota plays an important role in deterring fraud as well as ensuring that the person signing paperwork is who they say they are.

In North Dakota, notaries have the ability to notarize multiple document types, including deeds, mortgages, and powers of attorney. They can also administer oaths and take affidavits and depositions.

One catch with North Dakota notaries is that they can’t certify “true copies” of documents, which is common in some states. This means that you can only use original forms of identification with a notary, otherwise you’re out of luck.

To become a notary in North Dakota, individuals must pass a test and renew their status every four years. They are appointed and commissioned by the Secretary of State, and must take an oath of office signifying that they agree to uphold their duties as a North Dakota notary public.

And when a notary public in North Dakota notarizes documents, he or she must include the following information with a signature:

  • The words “Notary Public State of North Dakota”
  • The name of the county in which the notary applied
  • The date his or her commission expires

While this information is required, neither an ink stamp or embosser is necessary – although it is recommended.
