No one thinks about notaries until they need one, but then comes an even bigger question:
Where do you find one, and how can you know that your notary is truly qualified?
The answer depends on where you live and what you’re trying to accomplish – so to help answer these questions for residents of Oklahoma, we’ve put together this quick guide for notarizations in your state.
Here’s what you need to know:
Oklahoma Mobile Notaries
In Oklahoma, a notary public is commissioned for four years by the Secretary of State to carry out notarizations and the following primary duties:
- Administer oaths and affirmations;
- Take acknowledgments and proofs;
- Certify/attest copies;
- Take verifications upon oath or affirmation;
- Witness or attest signatures; and
- Execute protests.
To become a notary, applicants must submit the required paperwork to the Secretary of State with the required fee. Along with the application, they have to meet these requirements:
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be a legal resident of Oklahoma (the only exception is for individuals that work in Oklahoma but live in a different state)
- Must be 18 or older
- Cannot have a felony conviction
Once an applicant meets this threshold and receives their commission, the new notary public must obtain an ink stamp or embosser, which is required for any endorsing. This stamp must include the notary’s legal name, commission number, and expiration date of their commission.
Without the seal, any notarial acts are not official. In fact, endorsing without the seal could carry a misdemeanor charge for a notary. Be sure that your notary public has the correct seal.
An Oklahoma Notary Public must also carry a $1,000 surety bond. This bond must be signed by one or more sureties and then approved by the Secretary of State.
And finally, when you meet with a notary public, you will need to provide a government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, to prove your identity.
