In 2012, Virginia became the first state to allow for the authorization of a remote signer with an electronic notary using audio-visual conferencing technology to attest to the identity.
While this was a landmark move, it really didn’t change much about how the notarization process works – as you’ll learn here.
A notary public plays an essential role in acknowledging signatures on important documents, and you’ll very likely need the services of one at some point in your life.
As an impartial witness, their primary duty is to mitigate fraudulent documentation. But to do so, they public must follow the rules as set out by the state they’re commissioned in.
With that in mind, here’s a quick look at what Virginia notary publics do:

A Virginia notary public can notarize signatures, administer oaths, and certify copies. They must commence these duties impartially, and are restricted from engaging in situations where they are personally involved.
Notaries are also required to verify the identity of the signees using a government-issued identification card such as a driver’s license or passport.
