Things get a little more earthy and a little less connected when you head into Wyoming.
Call it a Wyoming state of mind — and it’s a perspective that extends to the state’s legislature too. Notary publics in Montana, for example, can perform notarial acts in both Wyoming and North Dakota, as part of an agreement for contiguous borders.
Here, it’s about connecting with and helping your fellow neighbors, and appreciating the wild outdoors.
And Wyoming is one of those states where the digital revolution just hasn’t hit yet — while the state accepts electronic notarizations (where the signature can be electronic), it still doesn’t allow online “webcam” notarizations.
So what are notaries in Wyoming responsible for? With Wyoming real estate, for example, on the rise, notary publics and the services they provide will become more important than ever.
Wyoming Mobile Notaries
Notaries in Wyoming are authorized to perform all the most essential functions that notaries do, across the country, which includes:
- Notarizing signatures — authenticating, certifying that the signature was made willingly and freely, asking key questions of the signer, verifying identity, including notarial certificates for multiple signers
- Place signers under oath or affirmation
These are the main “notarial acts” in Wyoming, and each instrument or documentation comes with its own notarial certificate.
The process for all notarial acts includes requirements like:
- Verifying photo ID
- Having the signer(s) appear personally and physically in front of the notary public
- Affixing the Notary Public’s official seal or stamp to the documents being notarized
But it’s not just about a notarial stamp or seal. The office of the Notary Public has a particular kind of ceremony and process around the notarial act and it’s up to the individual notary public to observe this process.
Another common aspect of the Notary Public’s job is keeping a log or a journal. In some states, this is an obligation.
Not so in Wyoming. Keeping a journal or a log of notarial acts is optional. However, once again, these entries can sometimes prove to be invaluable pieces of evidence, should a question ever come up about the integrity of the act.
Journal entries usually include the following information:
- Date and type of notarial act
- Names and signatures of persons involved
- Numbers of ID cards presented as identification for verification
- Optional signatures of individuals present + fingerprints
Every piece of documentation that is notarized is usually accompanied by a short form notarial certificate. These are the certificates that bear the notary public’s stamp and the commission expiration date.
Need a Mobile Notary Public in Wyoming?
If you need a mobile notary in Wyoming, you’ll know by the language on your forms. At the end of the form, there should be a place for a notary’s signature and seal. Some documents call for a witness, and a notary can serve this purpose, too. Most documents and forms that are filed with the court require a notary.
